What
is manhood? What does it mean to be a man today?
I
picked up The Book of Man Readings on the Path to Manhood by William
Bennett for a different perspective on what it means to be a man today from a
biblical perspective. It is a compilation of writings that causes one to pause
and consider the many facets of men and what decisions and revelations men have
had throughout history. It covers a
variety of spaces that men occupy from war to leisure, sports and politics. As
a woman, I was very excited to see what Mr. Bennett had to say about manhood
from a Biblical perspective.
As
far as books go, it was not one of my favorites. The book is intended to be
read in more than one sitting, however, many of the selections that I read were
not interesting at all. Also, I could not connect with many of the selections.
Although I am not a man, I thought that I would be able to “see” in the
selections the profiles of some of the men who have been a part of my life, but
I didn’t. The book was not what I expected, and did not answer many of my “what
is manhood” questions.
